New Seattle gun law requires firearms to be locked up when stored

After the mayor signs the legislation, it will be a civil infraction to store a gun in Seattle without the firearm being secured in a locked container. The Seattle city council voted unanimously to pass the legislation which allows fines up to $500 when a gun isn’t locked up, up to $1,000 when a prohibited person accesses a firearm and up to $10,000 when a prohibited person uses the weapon to hurt someone or commit a crime.

I am conflicted on safe storage laws; I do believe that a gun owner should be held responsible if someone gains access to their firearm and hurts another. I also think that the government should not be able to dictate how you store your firearm. Hold people responsible for their actions, or inactions, but don’t dictate how they live.
